Since the white fella first arrived Aussies have loved a drink and a punt - over $15b or 1.5% of Australia's GDP is spent on gambling. The government generated $5.6B in levies and taxes. Problem gamblers (300,000 people) represent over 33%. What is it?

Two very important yardsticks - past record and present performance - are not in their favour. But the Indians obviously feel that they have a realistic chance of putting it across the Aussies in the best-of-three finals of the CB tri-series that commences on Sunday. The belief in the Indian camp is that things are falling into place.

Adma gilchrist in his final match at the melbourne cricket ground produced a memorable performance by smashing 83 of just 50 deliveries but aussies lost the game due to some excellent bowling by the lankans and some reckless batting by the aussies.
